Hawaii Tea Farms

Tea Farm Profile:  Big Island Tea

Big Island Tea is one of Hawaii’s pioneer tea farms.  Situated on the NE slope of Mauna Loa volcano, at 3000 feet altitude, the tea farm's one and one-half acres has the perfect climate for growing quality Hawaii teas.  Big Island Tea’s mission is to produce exquisite hand-picked, hand-fired, and hand-rolled whole leaf artisan green, oolong, and black teas.  Big Island Tea co-owner, Eliah Halpenny, says "Our goal is to create a farm that is ecologically self-sustainable".

The farms tea bushes are of the highest quality, obtained from seed and parent stock originating in  Darjeeling India, China, and Japan.   At harvest only the tips (Pekoe) are hand-plucked then artfully hand-processed into whole leaf green, oolong and black finished teas.

Big Island Tea has implemented sustainable farming practices (only organic fertilizers; No pesticides or herbacides are used)  The farm is also re-creating an endemic Hawaiian forest canopy and understory to shade the tea plants and create a more stable agro-ecosystem.

Halpenny says "We implement sustainable farming practices (only organic fertilizers, no pesticides or herbicides).  We are also recreating an endemic Hawaiian forest canopy and understory to shade our precious tea trees, which creates a more stable agro-ecosystem".
